Florence Nightingale Trust Grants
Annual study grants have been established to support Tasmanian nurses in achieving their goals in nursing education and research.
The Study Grants are offfered to registered nurses (resident in Tasmania for two years prior to application) undertaking relevant post graduate studies within Australia.
The Nell Espie Study Grant is valued at $4000.
The Leonie Sidebottom Study Grant is valued at $3000.
The Robyn Whitworth Study Grant is valued at $1000.
Applications open on 1 July and close on 10 August each year.

How to Apply
Submissions of:
- Completed application form.
- Curriculum vitae including Academic and Clinical Practice achievement.
- Professional participation profile.
- Referee reports (2) non-academic. It is your responsibility to ensure referee forms are forwarded to each referee who is asked to return the completed forms to the secretary by the closing date.
- Statement addressing criteria.

- Description of current studies.
- Why you have chosen the particular study program.
- How you are going to use your future qualification to advance nursing practice.
- What are your long term career aspirations.
Florence Nightingale Study Grants Conditions
- Applicants must be resident in Tasmania for two years prior to the application.
- Presentation of a report on current study program and career aspirations at a professional assembly nominated by the Committee.
- Study Grants will be paid in two instalments during the academic year. The 2nd payment will be made on proof of continuance of proposed study program.
- Applications open on 1 July and close on 10 August each year.
- Late applications will not be considered.
- Applications without supporting references will not be considered.
- The selection process may involve interviews.
- The decision of the Selection Committee is final.
- The selection committee reserves the right not to make a Grant in any one year.
The Margaret Allwright Award for Achievement in Nursing Practice
The Margaret Allwright Award for Achievement in Nursing Practice has been established to recognise nurses whose work has been at a high level of achievement and which has made a significant contribution to the principles and practice of nursing.
The Award is a significant professional recognition and is offered annually to Registered Nurses of Tasmania.
The Award consists of a citation and gratuity valued at $500.
Applications open on 1 July and close on 10 August each year.
How to Apply
Submissions of:
- Completed application form.
- Description of project (not exceeding 1000 words) together with supporting documentation or attachments.
- Referee reports (2) familiar with project.
Selection Criteria (What the Selection Committee will look for…)
- Concern with an issue of current significance.
- Benefits to education/research and the principles or Nursing Practice.
- Ability of the applicant to further the development of Clinical Practice.
- A clear outline of the development of the project and the extent of the commitment of the applicant.
- Willingness to promote nursing to the wider community.
- Presentation and format will be considered.
- Accord with the Florence Nightingale Grants and Award mission statement.

Nursing Leadership Grant
Grant Description
The Trust offers an annual Grant to nurses registered and having practiced in Tasmania for at least five years to undertake a proposed leadership program or project within Tasmania, interstate or overseas.
The Grant is valued up to $10,000 but will vary from year to year depending on the recipients proposed leadership program or project and financial plan.
Applications open on 1 July and close on 10 August each year.
Interviews will be conducted before the end of August each year. The Grant will be available to the recipient in September of each year for use at an agreed time.
Objectives of the Grant
- To offer an annual Grant to registered nurses of Tasmania who wish to develop leadership skills in nursing.
- To assist registered nurses of Tasmania with potential leadership skills in realizing their goals in professional nursing practice.

- Referee reports (2) supporting the applicants professional background and proposed program or project.
- Description of the proposed program or project (not exceeding 1000 words) together with supporting documentation or attachments.
- Financial plan of the proposed program or project and itineray.

- Applicants must be registered and have practiced in Tasmania for at least five years prior to the application.
- Interviews will be held before the end of August each year.
- The Grant will be presented at a professional assembly each year.
- The recipient of the Grant will be required to enter into a contract with the Committee to present a report at the completion of the program or project.
- The award will be available to the recipent in September each year for use at an agreed time.
- Late applications will not be considered.
- Applications without supporting references will not be considered.

- The decision of the Selection Committee is final.
Aged Care Nursing Research and Evaluation Grant
Grant Description
A grant valued up to $10,000 is offered annually to Registered Nurses in Tasmania to undertake a research or evaluation project that is focused on aged care within Tasmania.
Preference will be given to one of the following projects:
- Attitudes of health care providers toward aged patients/clients in acute care settings.
- End of life decision making.
- Palliative care of the aged.
- Prescribing patterns, polypharmacy and medication outcomes monitoring in relation to the aged.
- Clinical risk in care of aged people. This includes falls prevention, medication errors, behaviour management.
- Dignity of risk and decision making influences on aged clients.
- Rehabilitation of aged people.
- Work force planning and innovation.
- The effect of regulation on standards of care provided by employed carers and support workers.
- Approaches to case management and care coordination.
- Maintenance of nutrition and hydration.
- Evaluation of complementary therapies in dementia care.
How to apply
Submission of:
- Curriculum vitae.
- Professional portfolio.
- Two (2) referee reports that support the applicant’s professional standing and the proposed research.
- The research project proposal with supporting documentation.
- A financial plan for the proposed project.
- A communication plan for the dissemination of the research/evaluation findings to identified key stakeholders.
- An annotated bibliography relevant to the proposed research topic.
Applications submitted without all of the requisite documentation will not be considered.

- Applicants must be registered and practicing as a nurse in Tasmania for at least two years prior to the application.
- Applications open on 1 July and close on 10 August each year. Late applications will not be considered.
- Interviews will be held in September each year.
- Grants are presented at a professional assembly each year.
- Grant recipients are required to enter into an agreement to present a report to the Florence Nightingale Grants and Awards Committee within three months of the expiry of the specified grant period (usually one year).
- One half of the grant will be provided to the recipient at commencement. The remainder of the grant will be provided to the recipient upon the acceptance of an interim report to the Florence Nightingale Grants & Awards Selection Committee six months prior to the conclusion of the specified grant period.
- The Florence Nightingale Grants & Awards Selection Committee reserves the right to not award a grant in any one year.
- Decisions of the Florence Nightingale Grants & Awards Selection Committee are final.
